Antarctic explorer, scientist receives honorary degree
Martin A. Pomerantz, director and professor emeritus of the Bartol Research Institute at the University, (left) receives the an honorary doctor of science degree from UD at the College of Arts and Science Honors Day ceremonies May 4. Howard E. Cosgrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees, (at podium) conferred the degree. In the degree citation, Pomerantz was described as a revered scientific leader who has been recognized for his outstanding research at the Bartol Research Institute. As a scientist and explorer, he carried the National Geographic flag to the South Pole and led numerous society expeditions in Antarctica. Pomerantz's work has been honored internationally, and he has received the National Science Foundation Distinguished Public Service Award and National Aeronautics and Space Administration Medal for Distinguished Scientific Achievement. An observatory in Antarctica is named in his honor. In 1999, Pomerantz and his wife, Molly, honored the University of Delaware by establishing an endowed fun to support the Martin A.
