In memoriam

Geraldine "Jerry" Lewes Shirley died March 13 at age 90. She was the wife of the late UD Provost and Academic Vice President John W. Shirley.

Mrs. Shirley graduated from the University of Iowa and was a mathematics teacher. She traveled extensively with her late husband and was an advocate for education, art and music. She is survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dr. Shirley was an internationally known authority on the Elizabethan scientist Thomas Harriot. He came to the University in 1962 as provost and vice president for academic affairs and served in that capacity until 1972, when he was named H. Fletcher Brown Professor. He also served as acting president of the University during 1967-68.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Delaware Department of Music or the Jean Shirley Frohlicher Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C., both in care of Robert T.
