Two awards honor returning women students' achievements

The Office of Women's Affairs sponsors the Bessie B. Collins and Mae Carter Awards, two annual awards that recognize the achievements of returning adult women students. Members of the University community may identify and nominate a student who meets the criteria of either of the awards as described below.

Bessie B. Collins Award

This $200 award was established to honor Bessie B. Collins, former dean of women and an early advocate of continuing education for women. The award is given to continue that support and to recognize the variety of perspectives, diversity and richness adult students bring to the UD community.

Nominees must be at least 25 years old, at least a matriculated junior, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have demonstrated successful potential, have special difficulties to overcome and made contributions to the University and greater community.

Mae Carter Award

Mae Carter, former assistant provost for women's affairs and executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women, is honored by this $500 award, which recognizes a woman UD student who, through her service to women on campus and her commitment to scholarship, carries on Carter's values.

Nominees must be an undergraduate or graduate returning adult woman student with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and have demonstrated a commitment to scholarship and service to women on campus.

Nominations for either award should outline how the individual meets the criteria of the award and must be accompanied by an autobiographical letter from the nominee describing her background, career plans and how she exemplifies the criteria for the award. Self-nomination is acceptable, but a supporting letter is necessary.

The application deadline is March 20. A nomination form and applications are available online at [www.udel.edu/OWA] under "Funding." For further information, call Dana Brittingham, Office of Women's Affairs, at 831-8063. The college and department of each award recipient will be notified. Awards will be presented on Honors Day, and the names of the award recipients will be published in UpDate.
