"Mary Martin has a demonstrated record of creativity and leadership in graduate student affairs and is highly knowledgeable of the University and its operations," Schiavelli said. As assistant provost, she is responsible for the Office of Graduate Studies, including coordination of academic functions, policies and procedures for admission, graduate student financial support and degree requirements for the 80 master's degree and 40 doctoral degree programs offered by the University. Martin also supervises the administration of graduate student financial support for fellows, teaching, research and graduate assistants and provides direction and serves as liaison with other University offices that provide services for graduate students. She serves as adviser to the Graduate Studies Senate Committee and is a member of the senate's Student Life Committee. Reporting directly to the vice provost for academic programs and planning, she serves as an adviser on matters related to policy, planning, management and operation of graduate programs and services for graduate students. "I am very pleased with this promotion, and I look forward to working with Mary Martin and the faculty in developing programs and policies to further enhance graduate education in the University," Bobby Gempesaw, vice provost for academic programs and planning, said. Martin began her service to the University as the administrator for graduate student academic affairs in 1988 and was named associate director in 1995. Previously, she was the assistant dean in the College of Business Administration at Valparaiso University, where she was named the college's Outstanding Business Teacher. She has taught accounting courses both at Valparaiso University and at UD. While at Delaware, Martin has received several awards, including the Best Presenter Award at the Chicago SISU conference, the Best Practice Award for the Exemplary Model of Administrative Leadership from the American Association of University Administrators and the President's Innovation Award. Martin holds a bachelor's degree in business with a minor in education and English from Valparaiso University and a master's degree in business and education from Indiana State University. She currently is completing her Ed.D. degree at UD. |
