Honorary degree ceremony Oct. 22 in Mitchell Hall

Members of the University community are invited to a ceremony to confer an honorary degree upon John Clifton Bogle at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 22, in Mitchell Hall.

Bogle is senior chairman of the board of The Vanguard Group Inc., and of each of the Vanguard mutual funds. He founded The Vanguard Group in 1974 and had been associated with a predecessor company since 1951, immediately after his graduation from Princeton University, magna cum laude in economics.

The Vanguard Group is one of the two largest mutual fund organizations in the world. Headquartered in Malvern, Pa., Vanguard includes some 100 mutual funds with current assets totaling some $500 billion. Vanguard 500 Index Fund, the largest fund in the group, was founded by Bogle in 1975. It was the first index mutual fund.

The honorary degree is the highest honor the University bestows.
