Pacesetters give '99 United Way drive a head start

With U There is a Better Way" is the theme of the 1999 United Way campaign. The annual kickoff reception for this year's campus United Way drive is scheduled for Oct. 13, and the campaign will continue through Oct. 29, according to chairperson Joyce Dennis Henderson, recruitment and employment.

This year's UD campaign goal is $210,000. Last year UD employees exceeded the $200,000 goal.

The Pacesetters campaign on campus, chaired by Robert Davis, vice president for development and alumni relations, begins Sept. 27 and continues until Oct. 8. During this period, senior UD administrators and employees pledge to support the annual fund drive and set the pace of the general campaign.

"The University's Pacesetter Campaign is the official start of the annual United Way effort on campus," Davis said. "I'm sure that this year, as our predecessors have done in years past, we will continue the University's long tradition of leadership and support for this worthwhile fund-raising project.

"Anyone who has ever been the recipient of the services of a United Way agency-or who knows someone who has received assistance-realizes the importance of the charitable community, religious organizations and social services that depend upon United Way support," Davis said. "As a major force in our community and state, the University has a responsibility to help our neighbors and friends who may need short- or long-term assistance. And, as we have done in the past, I'm sure the University of Delaware will reach its annual goal and serve as an example to other employers that caring individuals, working together, can accomplish a significant common goal," he said.

Members of the University's 1999 United Way Planning Committee, in addition to Henderson and Davis, are John Brennan, public relations; Julie Burton, general accounting; Joyce Hunter, continuing education; Tammy Jackson-Harmon, administrative services; Sylvester "Vest" Johnson, athletics; Catherine Johnston, marine studies; Bill Keene, public administration; Scott Mason, student centers; Greg Rumsey, agriculture and natural resources; and Brian Schmidt, Information Technologies/Media Services.

As in years past, a UD United Way video has been produced, Henderson said, and it will be premiered at the kickoff reception, at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Bob Carpenter Center.

An electronic video link will enable the program to be shown at the same time on the Lewes campus.

During the program, campus solicitors will hear opening kickoff remarks from President David Roselle and A. Keith Willard, 1999 United Way statewide campaign chairperson and chairperson of Zenaca Inc.

This year, a retiree campaign is being conducted from Sept. 20-Oct. 11. For information about the campaign or the video, which can be arranged to be shown in departments and offices, contact Henderson at 831-2171.
