Facilities head contributes to official reference book

David Millay, facilities management, has contributed to a new book, Facilities Operations & Engineering Reference. Published by the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE), the book is a compilation of facilities management and engineering disciplines ranging from electrical and mechanical engineering to cost estimating and budgeting, the book is the official reference for the Certified Plant Engineering Program as well as serving as a nuts-and-bolts reference book for anyone in the field.

As the introduction states, facility engineers and managers come from different backgrounds, with some trained as engineers and others in business and finance, but "whatever their academic training, facilities managers and engineers require a tremendous range of knowledge to effectively manage a facility's assets." The reference book is "designed to help fill the information needs of facility professionals at all levels of knowledge and to improve communications by bridging the gaps between technical experts, managers and administrators."

Millay reviewed the entire volume and contributed to several sections. Other contributors represent Westinghouse Corp., the U.S. Department of State, Boeing and several other corporate entities.

At UD, he has responsibility for operations and maintenance of Newark facilities, including utilities production, maintenance engineering, lock and hardware services, structural services, heating and cooling services, electrical and plumbing services.

Millay is past national president of the (AFE), and he currently serves on the board of directors as vice president for marketing and communications and sits on the AFE certification board. He also is chair of the AFE Foundation. In 1998, Millay was elected to the AFE College of Fellows.

A graduate of Northeastern University in industrial technology, Millay was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 13 years where he worked with the late Tom Vacha, UD assistant vice president for facilities, joining him at UD in 1996. Millay currently is working toward his MBA degree at UD.
