Facilities staff weathers storm

As Hurricane Floyd whirled its way up the East Coast, UD Facilities Management staff worked overtime to minimize the impact of the storm's unwelcome visit.

Typically, about 100 Facilities Management staff members work every weekday. During the storm on Thursday, more than 250 employees were on hand to deal with leaks, drain problems and high water. Some worked 18 hours straight to safeguard University property.

"We were very lucky and lost only eight trees," said Sam Jones, Facilities Management/ Grounds Services. While the storm raged, he and his colleagues cleaned up the larger downed branches. "The little ones we took care of over the weekend," he said.

"All members of our team," Dick Walter, Facilities Management, said, "did an outstanding job of preparing for Hurricane Floyd and minimizing its negative impact so normal operations could resume without a hitch on Friday."
