Blue & Gold Club renovation expands dining options

Joe Prince with GP Industries sets door locks on the new porch addition to the Blue & Gold Club.

A new patio and improvements to the porch dining room, being completed this month, will enhance the Blue & Gold Club's appearance and expand its ability to host special events.

According to Andy Welsh, Facilities, Planning and Construction, the renovation project includes two main components.

"The new French doors and windows on the porch will complement the rest of the building's architecture," Welsh said. "Also, a new brick patio has been built next to the porch dining area. This will be used as an expanded dining area and for receptions."

A ramp will allow access to the porch and patio area. From the new patio, a set of steps will lead to the club's spacious lawn, where a tent can be erected for parties and special events.

Manager Anthony Wright said he is excited about the renovation, which "will allow us to host larger events, such as wedding receptions and catered dinners on the lawn. The outside patio also will be a welcome addition."

In late spring, prior to construction, the club hosted more than 200 members at a barbecue especially designed to inform them of upcoming changes to the facility and allow them to ask questions about the construction project.

Homsey Architects, the same firm used for the renovation of Bayard Sharp Hall, designed the project, and Facilities, Planning and Construction's Minor Construction Division is serving as general contractor.
