Dance, free pizza, 'Dive-IN' will welcome back students

Movie House Anumber of activities are planned to welcome students to campus this fall, ranging from a special movie at the Outdoor Pool to picnics and prize drawings.

UD students have been invited to take a dip in the outdoor pool and enjoy a movie during the first ever "Dive-IN," scheduled Sunday, Aug. 27, as part of Delaworld activities held annually during New Student Orientation Week.

Sponsored by Office of Residence Life and the student centers, "Dive-IN" will feature the movie Deep Blue Sea, at 10 p.m., followed by some late- night skating at the Rust Ice Arena.

"We will put up some lounge chairs and have some extra life-guardson duty," James Kaden, ice arenas, said. "Students can snack, watch the movie or take a swim if they choose."

The movie screen, which is approximately 12 feet high and 24 feet wide, will be set up at the northeast end of the pool area and should make viewing fun for participants both in and out of the water.

Touted as the contemporary version of the original horror classic Jaws, the movie Deep Blue Sea was chosen by Scott Mason, student centers, because it met the criteria for an outdoor film event.

"Action films always work best outside, and we wanted something recent with blockbuster status," Mason said. "We wanted a movie with a water connection, and, with its diverse cast, the movie should appeal to many different students." Kaden said "dive-ins" could become regular UD events.

"If this is a success, we will probably do it again next year," Kaden said. "It might also be something we would want to do for our regular Outdoor Pool members."

"Off-Campus Students In The Know & Saturday Night Live" will be held 7 p.m., Aug. 26, at the Bob Carpenter Center, offering participants free pizza plus a chance to win a meal plan or free parking.

The event also will allow off-campus students to find out about parking, bus loops, computing from home and campus activities. Guests can then party the night away with all on-campus students at a Video Dance party.

Fall Activities Night is scheduled at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 28, in the Trabant University Center, where students will discover the vast array of student clubs available at UD. Afterwards, they will be able to join other students for the Welcome Back Dance at the Perkins Student Center.

Other early semester events include the RSO Social Picnic, held from 5 to 7 p.m., Aug. 31, outside the Trabant University Center. The event is free.

Getting Involved-Freshman Parents' Day workshop, will be held from 1-1:30 p.m., Sept. 9, at 127 Memorial Hall.
