In an innovative scavenger hunt designed to acquaint freshmen with alcohol-free establishments on Main Street, the UD/Newark Campus Community Coalition is encouraging students to visit 20 businesses to gather clues and figure out just where YoUDee might be hiding. The hunt will be on from noon, Sunday, Aug. 27, through noon, Thursday, Aug. 31. Prizes include a $300 shopping spree at Main Street businesses in the hunt, a $100 gift certificate to the Delaware Book Exchange, a $50 gift certificate to Rainbow Books & Music and dinner for two at Klondike Kate's. "The idea came out of the activities task group of the Campus/Community Coalition," Tracey Bachman, Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies, said. "The scavenger hunt is a great way to familiarize students with Main Street. Typically students see Main Street as a place with bars that serve alcohol, and we are hoping to alter that perception. We want them to know there are places on Main Street that offer alcohol-free events." Students participating in the scavenger hunt can get entry forms from their resident advisers, at the information desks at the Trabant University Center and the Perkins Student Center and at participating establishments. Entries must be returned to the Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies, located on Main Street. All correct responses to where YoUDee is hiding will be placed in a box, and winners drawn during an alcohol-free concert sponsored by SCENE (Students Creating Exciting New Events) from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, outdoors on the lawn of the Academy Building. Free food will be provided by Klondike Kate's, Donna's Delights, Fruit Freeze, Fatty Patty's and Peace a Pizza. The event will be held rain or shine. Beth Thomas |
