Gypsy children's art exhibit scheduled in Recitation Hall

"The Roma Children of Jarovnice: An Exhibit of Eastern European Gypsy Art" will be on view from Aug.14-18, at the Department of Art Gallery in Gypsy art Room 102 Recitation Hall. A free, public opening reception will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14. Daily gallery hours are from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. daily.

The exhibit will feature lively, colorful artwork depicting the Roma or gypsy culture, created by children in Slovokia, and by children from the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of New Castle County, according to Janell Binder, who with Pawel Bakowski of Delaware Technical and Community College, organized the project and exhibition.

Jan Sajko, an elementary school art teacher who has taught the Roma children in Slovakia for the past 15 years, was a guest instructor at the Boys and Girls Club for two weeks where he taught the children about the Roma culture and encouraged them to paint pictures depicting Roma life.

He was invited to give a lecture at UD's School of Education, and through the efforts of Eugene Matusov and Elizabeth Pemberton, both education, and Martha Carothers, art, the exhibition was arranged.

The Roma children's artwork has been shown and won awards in Europe, and plans are now under way to show the artwork from both the Slovokian and Delaware children in other exhibits in Delaware and Washington, D.C.
