The trustees approved changing the name of the College of Human Resources, Education and Public Policy to the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, to eliminate confusion over the phrase "human resources," which is now associated with the field of personnel management. Effective in September, residence hall rates will increase an average of 3.9 percent and dining plan rates will increase an average of 3 percent. The cost of a traditional multiple residence hall room will increase by $110 to $2,920 per year. The 19-meals-per-week meal plan will increase by $70 to $2,392 per year. Effective in June, the Student Health Service fee will increase by $5 per semester to $146, by $1 to $40 for Winter Session and by $2 to $54 for summer sessions. Other health service fees will increase an average of 3.5 percent. Long-time UD baseball coach Bob Hannah, a 1961 UD graduate, was honored with the renaming of Delaware Diamond as Bob Hannah Stadium, in recognition of his accomplishments and in gratitude "for his leadership and dedication to the ideals of fair play and good sportsmanship." Head volleyball coach Barbara Viera, whose 27 years at UD give her the longest tenure in Blue Hen women's athletics history, was honored with the naming of the volleyball court in the front gymnasium of the Carpenter Sports Building as the Barbara Viera Court, in recognition of her commitment to UD's academic standards, her tireless efforts on behalf of volleyball and her "unswerving dedication to the advancement of women's athletics."
When fully funded, this endowment will support * James R. Soles Undergraduate Citizenship Stipends, to encourage student involvement in special research or service projects focused on civic participation or practical internships in public service; * James R. Soles Graduate Fellowships in Political Science, to support graduate students preparing for public service careers; and * the James R. Soles Professorship in Political Science, to support a faculty member in the department with career commitments to teaching, to students and to active citizenship and civic involvement, as exemplified by Soles. In other activity, the trustees approved resolutions calling for * the disestablishment of the master of arts program in physical education, the master of arts in international programs and the bachelor of science in geophysics, because this need was met through other programs; * permanent status for the master of music degree and the master of arts in economics for educators degree; * renaming the bachelor of science degrees in agriculture, athletic training, physical education and health education, physical education studies and recreation and park administration as simply bachelor of science; * naming of the following endowed scholarships, fellowships and awards the William H. and Kay R. Iredale Scholarship, the Harold and Barbara Smith and Family Baseball Scholarship, the Christie Family Foundation Basketball Fund and the Christie Family Foundation Football Fund, the R.R.M. Carpenter III Baseball Endowment, the Pinto Family Scholarship, the Ed Kee Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Donald J. Puglisi Outstanding Award and the Fraser and Shirley Russell Teaching Fellowship, in recognition of their generous benefactors; and * authorizing the president to confer degrees at Commencement May 27. At the meeting, Larry Griffith, admissions, gave an overveiw of UD's enrollment management, and Provost Mel Schiavelli thanked two interim deans Kenneth Biederman, business and economics, and Andras Szeri, Robert L. Spencer Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who are returning to the faculty, with the appointment of new deans to those colleges. In addition, Debra Norris, art conservation, discussed the University's cooperative program with Winterthur Museum in art conservation, and President David P. Roselle presented an overview of UD's achievements from 1990-2000. The board paid special recognition to M. Jane Richter of Dover, who completed her term as on the board, and elected a new trustee, Constance Gerardi Sullivan of Felton, to a six-year term. The board also re-elected two trustees: Sherman Townsend of Dover to a six-year term, and Philip J. Torina Jr. of New Rochelle, N.Y., to an another one-year term as the recent graduate trustee. Board officers Howard Cosgrove, chairman, Robert A.Fischer Jr. and Robert W. Gore, both vice chairmen, and Joan Thompson-Mobley, secretary-treasurer were re-elected for another one-year term. |
