Young Pianist featured at Newark Symphony concert


Pianist Roberta Jane Watts, winner of the 22nd annual Young Musicians Concerto Competition, will play with the Newark Symphony at 7:30 p.m.,
Saturday, May 13, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

Watts will perform Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto. The program also will include Verdi's Prelude, Ballet Music & Trimphal Music from Aida,
and Wagner's Ring Cycle Excerpts.

A 17-year-old high school student who also plays the oboe, Watts began playing piano at age 7 and currently plays with the UD Wind Ensemble
and chamber groups.

A home school student, she is currently taking courses at UD and plans to attend the University this fall as a music performance major in both piano
and oboe. She studies with Christine Delbeau.

Tickets for the event are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for students (those in eighth grade and below are admitted free).

UD Downtown Center part of Education Expo May 18-19

UD's Downtown Center will be featured along with other colleges and universities during the Downtown Wilmington Education Expo being held at lunchtime on Thursday and Friday, May 18-19. This outdoor display will be set up from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Market Street Mall between 8th and 9th streets. It will highlight educational opportunities for working adults in downtown Wilmington and the surrounding area.

Step into health and fitness on Employee Health Day


A number of activities are planned to help employees get fit for the spring and upcoming summer seasons. Three events are slated to help mark National Employee Health Day on Thursday, May 18.

A Departmental Wiffleball Tournament will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Carpenter Sports Building Gymnasium. The registration deadline is Friday, May 12. For details, call Tony at 831-4267.

A Mall Mystery Tour, a self-paced walking tour of the middle of campus, will be conducted from 10: a.m.-2 p.m. Participants may join in anytime during the program, but should pick up a walking guide at 240 Alison Hall or 125 Carpenter Sports Building. Each walker will receive a small gift.

A 5K or 2-mile walk along White Clay Creek will begin at 12:20 p.m. at the bottom of the hill on Creek Road, just north of the intersection of Cleveland and North College avenues. Each participant will receive a Wellness T-shirt. For more specific details, call the Employee Wellness Center at 831-8388.

Old New Castle celebration on May 20 in historic town

A Day in Old New Castle, which includes a tour of three dozen historic homes and gardens in the picturesque community on the banks of the Delaware River, will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, May 20.

The Half Moon, a full-sized replica of the first European ship to visit the Delaware Bay, will be docked along The Strand and available for boarding. There also will be a mock battle, in which the Second Pennsylvania Regiment will seek to seize the ship.

The day will feature musical entertainment, crafts displays, colonial dancing and carriage rides for all ages.

Admission is $14 for adults and $7 for children 6-12 years old; preschool children are free when accompanied by an adult. All proceeds are used to help fund the preservation of historic properties in colonial New Castle.

Wellness seminar to present benefits of soy products


The Employee Wellness Center will offer "Sensational Soy," a program presented by Erick Sussin, food science, from noon-1 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, in 208 Gore Hall.

The program will provide information about the many health benefits of soy and offer helpful suggestions on incorporating soy foods into one's diet. There also will be soy foods to sample, partially donated by Newark Natural Foods Store.

Soy foods have been proven beneficial for a variety of health concerns, including the prevention of heart disease, some cancers and osteoporosis.

Cost is $10 Wellness Dollars or $10 cash.
