Campus committee formed to review professional positions

A Professional Classification Review Committee, chaired by Michael Middaugh, Institutional Research and Planning, and Tom LaPenta, Labor Relations and Human Resources, has been formed to review the classification system for professionals.

"It has been 10 years since the classification system was put into place, and in that time job responsibilities can change. The purpose of the review is to update information about professional positions so that titles and descriptions accurately reflect what each job entails," Maxine Colm, administration, said.

"We have just completed a successful review of salaried staff positions and are now surveying professional positions. We hope that all professionals will cooperate with the committee and provide input about their positions," she said. She underscored that no one will experience a reduction in salary or a downgrade of classification as a result of the survey.

"With new technology and evolving responsibilities, positions can change," Middaugh said. "We do not expect wholesale changes, but it is important to periodically take a look to make sure job titles and classifications are accurate. The committee conducting the survey is broadly representative of most areas of professional activity at the University."

Middaugh said the committee plans to send out a detailed memorandum to all professionals explaining the review process early in the fall. Professionals will then be asked to complete a survey on the web describing their duties and responsibilities. The survey also will be reviewed by their supervisor. The committee will receive the data and review it for internal consistency, looking at each job title, classification and description. The process will be completed by May 2000.

Those serving on the committee are Paul Anderson and Anne Esdale, library; Heather Early, engineering; Patricia Fogg, facilities administration; Norma Gaines-Hanks, individual and family studies; Linda Graham, institutional research and planning; Carl Jacobson, Management Information Services; Charlene Mylin, Information Technologies; Marilyn Prime, student centers; Gregory Rumsey, agriculture and natural resources; and Janice Spry, geography.
