New five-color press arrives in GCC

Personnel in the Graphic Communications Center on South Chapel Street show off UD's new five-color press. Standing beside the press, which is 10 feet wide and 24 feet long, is Rodney Brown, manager of Graphic Communication Center (foreground). Working on installation and set-up of the press are, from left, Dan Slaten, Bob Johnston and Paul Fahringer.

According to Brown, the addition of this new five-color Komori press means that the Graphic Communications Center will be able to produce most of the high quality, color jobs that previously had to be sent off campus.

The Komori has a very large sheet size with a maximum printing area of 19 1/2" x 27 1/2". Its minimum speed is 3,000 sheets per hour, which was the old press' top speed for four-color work. With the new unit, Brown said, the Graphic Communications Center can run four process colors and either a specific Pantone Matching System (PMS) color or varnish on the fifth unit at a top speed of 15,000 sheets an hour.

"What used to take us days to complete," Brown said, "now will be able to be completed in hours. We look forward to showing off our new Komori press at our annual open house in October."

Training on the new press started this week, and it should be operational by next week.
