Elliott named chairperson of national safety group

Robin Elliott, Occupational Health and Safety, has been appointed chairperson of the Campus Safety Awards Committee of the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA).

A part of the National Safety Council, the international organization, formerly known as the Campus Safety Association, was founded in 1954 to address the specific health and safety challenges on college and university campuses.

Elliott, who has served on the awards committee for the past year, said she was honored to be selected as chairperson by her peers. “The appointment also will benefit me professionally because I will learn about effective approaches to safety programs at other schools,” she said.

The committee will meet this month in Chicago at the National Safety Council headquarters to evaluate entries from member institutions.

Awards are given in six categories, including the complete environmental, health and safety program; innovation; web sites; and the distinguished service to safety award.

UD won the Award of Honor in the complete environmental, health and safety program category in 1998 and the Award of Recognition in the unique or innovative approach to campus safety category in 1999.

UD’s Department of Occupational Health and Safety has implemented a number of innovative approaches to campuswide safety, including a Safety Auditing Program that involves cooperation from faculty and staff members and also trains students to be safety conscious and take proper precautions and use safety equipment.

Under another program, UD units and employees are recognized on a regular monthly basis for their suggestions and attention to detail related to safety issues. The occupational health and safety web site is used to publicize those selected to receive campus safety awards.
