Two new career programs to
be offered for professional staff

Employee training and career development is offering two career development series for professional staff members that will provide information on UD career opportunities.

One series is designed to provide new professionals—UD employees with five or fewer years of experience-with a broad-base of knowledge concerning career development tools, budget issues, campus technology and human resource issues.

The Career Development Program for New Professionals will be presented from noon-2 p.m., Fridays, March 24, April 14 and 28 and May 12 and 26, in 219 Trabant University Center.

The scheduled sessions include:

  • Session I, “Organization of the University and Understanding the Culture of the University,” presented by Richie Holland, employee training and career development, and Executive Vice President David Hollowell;
  • Session II, “Classification Program and Career Ladders,” presented by Chris Ulrich, human resources;
  • Session III, “UD Budget Process and Information Technologies at UD,” presented by Janet DeVry, User Services; Jeff Quirico, provost’s office; and Carol Rylee, budget office;
  • Session IV, “Developing Tools for Career Growth,” presented by Marianne Green, Career Services Center; and
  • Session V, “Networking at the University and Identifying/Developing a Relationship with a Mentor,” presented by Liane Sorenson, women’s affairs.

The second series is designed for veteran professionals, those with six or more years of professional experience at UD. This series will devote more attention to issues related to long-term career goals and career enhancement initiatives.

“In these long-term sessions,” Holland said, “we will examine more personal stories of University staff who have moved into different positions within the campus organizational structure. We will examine how they changed their occupational situation by taking advantage of a wide range of employment related opportunities that UD has to offer. Because of the focus of this series, we will spend less time on UD functional areas, such as budget.”

The Career Development Program for Veteran Professionals will be presented from noon-2 p.m., Wednesdays, March 29, April 12 and 26 and May 10 and 24, in the Kirkwood Room of the Perkins Student Center.

The scheduled sessions include:

  • Session I, “Organization of the University and Where UD is Heading in the New Millennium,” presented by Holland and Hollowell;
  • Session II, “Career Case Studies: Guest Speakers Outline Their Career Growth and Moves,” presented by a panel of academic and administrative staff;
  • Session III, “Networking at the University and Identifying and Developing a Relationship with a Mentor,” presented by Audrey Helfman, Center for Community Development and Family Policy;
  • Session IV, “Long-Term Career Goals: Developing Leadership Competencies,” presented by Myrna Bair, Institute for Public Administration; and
  • Session V: “Career and Academic Enrichment Opportunities,” presented by Tom DiLorenzo, arts and science; and Holland.

“Space for the courses is limited. I am looking for small groups that can interact with presenters and network with each other,” Holland said.

Professional staff interested in joining one of the series must send e-mail to Holland at <RichieH@udel.edu> by March 20.

According to Vice President for Administration Maxine Colm, “We are pleased to offer a new series that addresses the career interests of the recently hired professional as well as those of our more seasoned staff. Begun as a pilot program this spring, we look forward to receiving commentary from participants as to how we can better serve the needs of the University’s professional staff.”

Applicants must include name, department and phone number.

Participants must be available for all sessions and will be selected based on availability for the entire series and group composition. The employee training instructors want to insure that there is a balanced mix of participants representing both academic and administrative offices.
