| UD field hockey player Kelly Cawley, AS 99, who capped a stellar four-year career last fall by earning All-Mid Atlantic Region honors, has been named the NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Delaware.
Cawley, who earned her degree in psychology in May and currently is enrolled in a masters degree program at West Chester University, returned to campus Jan. 22 and was recognized at pregame ceremonies before the mens basketball game against Towson University. She was one of 51 state-level winners announced by the NCAA. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors outstanding female student-athletes from NCAA institutions who have excelled in the collegiate environment beyond their athletics pursuits with academic achievements and community involvement. UD has been honored with the state winner seven times in the awards nine-year existence. Cawley was one of the 10 finalists for the national NCAA Woman of the Year award. Cawley capped an outstanding four-year career as a forward for the nationally ranked UD field hockey team. A two-year co-captain, she established school records for points in a career (127), assists in a career (49), assists in a game (4) and assists in a season (21). She was a first team All-Region and All-America East selection in 1998, when she led the team with nine goals and 19 assists for 37 points and helped head coach Carol Millers team post a 15-6 record and an America East Conference semifinal berth. Cawley was named the 1998 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey and was a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) second team District II Academic All-American. She also was named to the College Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic team three times. She graduated with a 3.602 grade point average. In addition, she volunteered with the Leader Nursing Home and served an internship with Carelink Community Support Services. |
