Rhodes Scholar to return
as Commencement speaker

Leonard P. Stark, a 1991 UD graduate, Rhodes Scholar and currently litigation associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Wilmington, will be the featured speaker at the University's Winter Commencement, scheduled at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center on the Newark campus.

Each year, a distinguished UD graduate is invited to speak at Winter Commencement, which recognizes students who complete their degree requirements in August and December.

Also at the ceremony, the Rev. Jane Nuckols Garrett, a 1957 alumna and senior editor at Alfred A. Knopf Inc. in New York, will be awarded the UD Medal of Distinction. Garrett has served as editor for several prize-winning books, including six Pulitzer Prize-winners in history and four Bancroft Award-winners.

The Medal of Distinction, the highest award presented by the University, is awarded in recognition of professional achievements or public service of national or international significance.

Attendance at graduation is voluntary, but all participants are required to be in academic regalia, which can be ordered from the University Bookstore, telephone 831-2637.

Each graduating student is entitled to a maximum of six guest tickets, which will be available at the Student Services Building from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Dec. 6-10. Since seating is limited, the ceremony is open only to graduates and their families.

Seating for the ceremony is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Stark received three degrees from UD in 1991: an honors bachelor's degree in political science, a bachelor of science with distinction in economics, a minor in women's studies and a master's degree in European medieval and early modern history.

While at UD, his honors included the Alexander J. Taylor Award as the outstanding senior man, induction into Phi Beta Kappa and being named to the USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team.

During his senior year, Stark became the seventh UD alumnus to win a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, which took him to Oxford University in England for two years, where he received his Ph.D.

He returned to the United States and completed his law degree at Yale Law School, where he served as editor and then senior editor of the Yale Law Journal.

In 1996-97, he served as judicial law clerk in the chambers of Walter K. Stapleton of the Third Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals, in Wilmington.

He joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in 1997.

Stark is the author of the book Choosing a Leader: Party Leadership Contests in Britain from Macmillan to Blair, as well as several articles in law and academic journals.

As an adjunct professor at UD, he teaches a senior-level, undergraduate political science course on American constitutional law, focusing on the separation of powers and federalism.

Since 1996, he has served as secretary of the Delaware Rhodes Scholarship selection committee.
