On campus, Roland Smith, student life, is involved in helping students make the most of their years at UD.Off campus, as chairperson of the Exploring Division of the Del-Mar-Va Council, Boy Scouts of America, Smith is involved in helping another group of young men and women achieve their potential through scouting. The Exploring Division has approximately 4,800 members in the council and is career oriented, to help scouts learn about different professions and vocations. This year, as chairperson of exploring, Smith served on the committee for an "Inaugural Salute to Women Pioneers," luncheon in November, in Clayton Hall, to help raise funds for the Exploring Division. The luncheon honored Roxana Arsht and Muriel Gilman, both cited for serving as "exemplary roles models for young women" by combining "family, community and career successes to significantly improve the quality of life for all Delawareans." Admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1941, Arsht served as a judge in the Family Court from 1971-1983 and has been active in numerous community agencies. Among her honors, she received the University of Delaware Medal of Distinction in 1989, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women in 1986 and received the Josiah Marvel Cup for community service in 1986. She and her late husband, Samuel, have been longtime friends and supporters of the University, and Arsht Hall on the Wilmington campus is named in their honor. Muriel Gilman , formerly the vice president of United Way of Delaware, serves as a consultant in the College of Health and Nursing Sciences. An active member on the boards of many community agencies and volunteer organizations, Gilman received the United Way of Delaware Chairman's Award in 1998, the Josiah Marvel Cup Award in 1995 and with her late husband, Marvin, a long-time member of the UD faculty, the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware Award in 1993. In addition to Smith, others from UD serving on the luncheon committee were Kenneth Biederman and Linda Dunn, both business and economics, and Richard B. Fischer, continuing education. |
