This fall, the UD Equestrian Club has been off and running- not to mention walking, trotting, cantering, galloping and jumping. This fall, the club has competed at an invitational competition at Purdue University and twice at Beaver College, where it came in third both times.

Most recently, the equestrian team came in first at a Nov. 6 competition at Rutgers University.

The Equestrian Club will host a competition on Nov. 14 at South Branch Farms in York, Pa., the home of Sarah Wayda AG 2000, who co-captains the UD team with Jen Delp, AS 2000. The team also is preparing for the regional Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competition, scheduled Nov. 21 at Fox Heath Farm, in Furlong, Pa.

The club has between 50 and 60 members, who range from beginners to experts, according to president Jodie Fleming, AG 2000. Some members have never been on a horse before joining the club, Fleming said, while others, like herself, have been riding for years and own their own horses. From this membership, 35 compete on the UD team.

There is a feeling of camaraderie on the team because the members share a love of horses and help each other develop their skills, Fleming, a pre-veterinarian student, said.

The team is coached by Bryan Bradley, with horses stabled at his farm and other nearby locations.

To raise money, Fleming said they offer pony rides at Newark Community Day and Ag Day, judge fences at Fair Hill, Md., and help with community horse shows.

The UD team captured the 1996-97 national title, edging out Colorado State University.
