Faculty and staff who also are UD alumni are invited to play an important role in the career development of current students by volunteering for the newly revamped Day On The Job program.
"Day On The Job was initiated 12 years ago by alumni and the Career Services Center (CSC) to match students with alumni employed in occupations of mutual interest," Jack Townsend, center director, said. "Students would look through a binder of interested alumni, contact them with our help and spend a day or part of the day with them to learn about their careers."
In the past year, Day On The Job, has gone on line. By clicking on <http://www. udel.edu/CSC/dayonthejob. html>, alumni are able to enter biographical and job information on a web form. Students can browse through the list of alumni, seeing only career-related information.
Names and phone numbers are kept confidential until a Career Services staff member meets with the student and makes the match. Selected alumni "mentors" are contacted by Career Services with the name and background information of the student who will be getting in touch with them.
Whatever their jobs at UD might be, alumni can provide down-to-earth, real-world advice to students in search of a satisfying career. A few hours of job shadowing (from part of the day to a whole day), some conversation and advice can definitely make a difference.
