Volunteer Computing public meeting set Aug. 29 at UD

2:15 p.m., Aug. 14, 2008--David Anderson, of the University of California at Berkeley, will discuss “Exa-Scale Volunteer Computing" as part of the first East Coast meeting of the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) to be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, in 117 Gore Hall.

Volunteer Computing (VC) projects harness resources owned by the public and connected to the Internet. BOINC is a well-known middleware that supports the VC paradigm.

The meeting is an opportunity for scientists, students and instructors to discuss state-of-the-art VC while learning about the latest opportunities supported by BOINC and its large community of volunteers.

Anderson, the pioneer of the Volunteer Computing paradigm and BOINC middleware, will join local and international scientists in presenting achievements and future research and educational opportunities.

Additional presentations include:

  • “Emulating BOINC Applications with EmBA” by Trilce Estrada, UD doctoral level;
  • “Leiden Classical-BOINC in Teaching” by Mark Somers, University of Leiden, The Netherlands;
  • “BOINC as Part of a Comprehensive, Multi-Resource Grid Computing System” by Michael P. Cummings, University of Maryland, College Park;
  • “The Invisible Hand and Hidden Markets of the BOINC Community Platform” by Jack Shultz, National Academies, and Andrew Gillette, foundation for Computational Learning & Science; and
  • "Distributed Data and Grid Computing for Inquiry-based Sciences Education and Outreach” by Eric Myers, LIGO Hanford Observatory.

There are now more than 70 BOINC-based projects, with a total computing power that has grown from 100 teraFLOPS to 1,200 teraFLOPS. Several of these projects are supported by industrial partners, such as IBM, and national funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation.

Registration is appreciated. To register, e-mail Michela Taufer at [taufer@udel.edu] before Wednesday, Aug. 20, or call (302) 831-0071.
