UD’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter celebrates 100th year

10:05 a.m., Oct. 11, 2007--UD's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society was honored in August in Orlando, Fla., during the closing banquet of the 2004-2007 Phi Kappa Phi Triennial Convention for celebrating its 100-year anniversary.

The UD chapter was founded on Jan. 13, 1905 and since has initiated 6,168 members. The current chapter president, Russell E. Murray Jr., associate professor of music and associate chairperson in the music department, was in attendance to accept a certificate commemorating the anniversary.

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and largest all-discipline honor society. It inducts more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni annually, and has chapters at more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Since its founding, more than 1 million members have been initiated, including President Jimmy Carter and writer John Grisham.
