What is UD Alert?
UD Alert is part of the University's emergency response plan. In case of a major emergency, the system enables the University to broadcast information quickly to the campus community through text messages, voice and e-mail. This new system provides an additional method of emergency communication, in addition to postings on the UD home page and UDaily, broadcast e-mail, broadcast voice messages to University telephones in offices and classrooms and loudspeaker announcements.
What do I need to do to ensure that I get the message?
Students should make sure all contact information is correct in UDSIS. Faculty and staff members should check to verify their information in the Human Resources system. Employees who do not have computer access should contact their HR Liaison. Information on how to update information is available at these sites:

Is my contact information secure?
Yes, this information is secure and confidential. It will only be used for official University business.
When will UD Alert be used?
UD Alert will only be activated during major emergencies, situations where there an imminent danger to the safety and welfare of students, faculty and staff, or in a situation in which a state of emergency is declared.
What is a state of emergency?
A state of emergency is a governmental declaration that may suspend certain normal functions of public and/or private institutions, may work to alert citizens to alter their normal behaviors, or may order government agencies to implement emergency preparedness plans. Such declarations usually come during a time of natural disaster.
Who decides when UD Alert will be used?
That decision is made through Public Safety, in consultation with the University's top administrators.
How reliable is this system?
An extensive review process was used to choose the emergency notification vendor, Send Word Now. The company is one of the country's leading providers of alert and response services, and its clients include major corporations, as well as higher education institutions. Students and employees can enhance the system's reliability by keeping their contact information up to date.
Will the system be tested?
Yes. Public Safety will test the system from time to time. Members of the University community will be notified in advance of any tests.
What should I do if I receive a UD Alert?
Read the message. Follow the instructions given in the message. If possible, alert others.
How do I reply to an E-mail message?
E-mail messages may list one or more response options for recipients. To respond to the message, hit the reply button. In the body of the message, type the number that corresponds to the response you wish to give. Hit the send button. DO NOT alter the layout of the previous text in any way when replying.
The text message came through as two separate messages on my phone. Why?
Text messages are limited to 160 characters. This is an SMS (text message) standard limitation. Therefore, serial messages occur when the entire message reaches beyond 160 characters. You will know how many messages you are likely to receive by the header information. The header in each text message says “message X of N.” Since we want to ensure that you receive all the emergency information necessary, serial messages may be necessary. If for some reason, you believe you have not received the entire message, visit the University's homepage, check your e-mail (since we send messages to multiple communications methods) or ask a friend.
