3:36 p.m., Nov. 16, 2007--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Thomas Gaisser, Martin A. Pomerantz Chair of Physics and Astronomy, and a UD Antarctic research team were featured in a front page Nov. 16 News Journal story. The newspaper, and also UDaily, are carrying a blog Gaisser and colleagues are writing while working at the South Pole.

Ardeshir Faghri, professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Delaware Center for Transportation, was quoted in a Nov. 15 News Journal story about a transportation forum sponsored by UD.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was cited in a Nov. 15 KYW Newsradio report on electric cars.

James Corbett, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a Nov. 12 Associated Press story about the San Francisco Bay spill of bunker fuel. “If it's too thick and too complex to combust in an engine, we make tar out of it, but if it's still able to be heated and to flow through a pipe, we call it bunker fuel,” Corbett said.

Susan Strasser, professor of history, was quoted Nov. 12 in an American Public Media Marketplace program on Crisco. She talked about the product from her book, Satisfaction Guaranteed: The Making of the American Mass Market.

Karen Curtis, associate professor of urban affairs, and Carol Hoffecker, Richards Professor Emerita of History, were quoted in a Nov. 11 News Journal story on philanthropy and the arts.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Nov. 11 Charlotte Observer story about how companies handle the sudden loss of a chief executive officer. "The key is when the captain goes down you don't suddenly go on a rudderless course," Elson said.

Jeremy Firestone, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a Nov. 10 News Journal story on a dispute over a report on wind power costs.

Madeline Lambrecht, director of UD's Division of Special Programs and president of the Delaware End-of-Life Coalition, was interviewed on Comcast CN8 about the loss of her son to suicide in 1991. The interview was in advance of the 9th annual Survivors of Suicide Day program scheduled Nov. 17 at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute.
