Applications are being accepted for TIDE Camp Summer 2008, which is an instructional program designed to give high school students exposure to the scientific processes at work in Delaware Bay. Students will spend 10 days living in UD residence halls and learning about topics such as sea breezes, tides, habitat loss, species adaptation, saltwater marsh filtration, sediment transport and climate change.
Campers will participate in activities that include visiting oceanographic and atmospheric laboratories and research vessels, going on field excursions for sampling and exploration, and taking part in discussions and lectures. They also will have opportunities to interact with faculty, design and complete experiments and learn about UD program offerings.
“This camp is designed for any student who loves science, enjoys the coast, and wants to explore the world of marine and earth studies,” said Frank Newton, assistant dean for student services, who helped create the camp along with faculty member Dana Veron, research faculty member in the Physical Ocean Science and Engineering program.
Newton added that students also will participate in fun activities such as a volleyball tournament and picnics.
Applications, which include completing a form available on the program's Web site, are due Friday, June 6. Any high schooler with solid math and science skills and an interest in the marine environment may apply.
The camp runs Sunday, July 20, through Friday, August 1, with a break from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27. Students will stay five days at UD's Newark campus and five days at UD's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Del. Tuition is $500 and covers room, board, lab and class materials, and scheduled out-of-class activities.
