UD women’s rugby ranked No. 4 nationwide

4:10 p.m., May 16, 2008--UD's women's rugby club team finished up their season on May 10 with a win over UD alumni. The spring season is now over and the team won't start practicing again until the fall.

When the final national rankings were released, UD's women's rugby club team was ranked No. 4 in the nation for division 2 teams. According to the team's Web site, its overall record was 6-1-1, scoring 230 points over those eight games while allowing 54.

After placing second in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) in the fall, the team was given the opportunity to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Union (MARFU) championship this spring. After not qualifying for the tournament for several years, UD's women's team lost a close game to Shippensburg University in overtime. Shippensburg went on to win the championship.

Lori Kenuk, the team's forward's captain and a junior majoring in health sciences, said, “The success that we experienced this year was entirely due to the hard work and dedication put forth by every member of the rugby team. Not only do we practice hard three days a week, but the girls take it upon themselves to work out outside of practice and that has really paid off in the long run. I cannot solely give credit to the players for the success this season because it would not have been possible without our three amazing coaches.”

The team is coached by Mike McClay, Brendan McCarron and Quentin Speight.
