Shop Main Street Tuesday and help disaster victims

11:23 a.m., May 19, 2008--University student groups and Main Street merchants are joining forces to help disaster victims a half a world away in Myanmar (Burma), which was hit by Cyclone Nargis on May 2, and the Sichuan province of China, which was devastated by an earthquake on May 12.

On Tuesday, May 20, several registered student organizations and Newark businesses are sponsoring Get Out on Main Street Day, with more than 18 business donating 5-10 percent of fundraising-related purchases to the Red Cross to help those who lives have shattered by the two diasters. For a complete list of participating businesses, go to [http://icare2008.com/businesses.html].

To take part, shop at any of the participating Main Street businesses and state that you are there for the Disaster Relief Fundraiser and 5-10 percent of your purchase will be donated to the Red Cross. It also is suggested that people wear dark clothing in remembrance of the thousands who perished.

Junior Kavi Chokshi, of Bear, Del., is the original driving force behind the fundraiser. To raise awareness and to raise funds for disaster victims, Chokshi has enlisted the help of several student organizations, including Blue Hen Marketing Club, the Business Student Advisory Board, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, UD Red Cross Club, Resident Student Association, Indian Student Association, Campus Crusade for Christ, Kappa Sigma fraternity and many others.
