Sophomore honored for community service

4:24 p.m., March 27, 2008--The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and America's Promise Alliance have selected Ashley Reznik, a sophomore biology major from Manalatan, N.J., to receive a Scholar of Promise Service Award.

The award recognizes young people for outstanding community service.

“I was very surprised,” Reznik said. “Volunteering means a lot to me, and I do it constantly. I started in the eighth grade through my church and volunteered in an emergency room throughout high school.”

Reznik, who is pre-med, said that from December 2006 through January 2007, she donated four hours a week helping in a New Jersey nursing home, obtained her emergency medical technician certification and volunteered with the local first aid squad throughout the summer.

NSCS is a national honors organization for first- and second-year college students who have a GPA of at least 3.4 and rank in the top 20 percent of their class. America's Promise Alliance is a multi-sector collaborative dedicated to the well-being of children and youth.

Members who complete 50 hours of community service within a 12-month period receive a signed certificate and letter from America's Promise and their names are posted on the NSCS Web site.

“The Scholar of Promise Award is a great way to recognize students for their commitment to service, which is one of the pillars of NSCS,” said Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS executive director. “Ashley is an excellent example of what making a difference is all about. Ashley's dedication is an inspiration to us all.”
