’Women of Color Respond to Violence’ talk set March 25

4:49 p.m., March 12, 2008--“Women of Color Respond to Violence,” a talk by Maria Ochoa, a visiting lecturer, author and professor, is set for 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, in 115 Purnell Hall.

The event is being held to raise awareness about gender and racial issues and will conclude with a book signing session by Ochoa, who will be selling copies of her recently published book, Shout Out: Women of Color Respond to Violence.

A professor of sociology and women's studies at San Jose University, Ochoa is the author of Voices of Russell City: An Oral History about a Town and its People and Creative Collectives: Chicana Artists Working in Community.

She also has published poetry in the anthology Oakland Out Loud and has produced and directed the video, Voices of Russell City: The Annual Reunion Picnic. She was honored in 1999 by the California State Assembly with the Woman of the Year Award for her longstanding contribution to the arts.

Both the lecture and the book signing are free and open to the public.

The event, which is part of UD's Sexual Assault Awareness Month programming, is cosponsored by Black America Studies, Department of English, Latino Heritage Caucus, Women's Studies, Campus Alliance de La Raza, Chi Upsilon Sigma and Lambda Theta Alpha.
