10:50 a.m., March 14, 2008--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Mark Samuels Lasner, senior research fellow, University of Delaware Library, and Margaret D. Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, are featured in the April issue of Fine Art Connoisseur in an article titled “Facing the Late Victorians: The Mark Samuels Lasner Collection” by Peter Trippi. Samuels Lasner said he “is delighted with the attention his treasures have enjoyed at Delaware.”

UD quarterback Joe Flacco is cited in the popular They Said It feature in the March 17 issue of Sports Illustrated. Asked a hypothetical question about which actor would portray him in a movie about his life, Flacco said, “Who cares? The important part is who plays my love interest.”

Tammy Anderson, associate professor of sociology, was quoted in a March 14 News Journal story about the resignation of New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer after he was identified as a client of a prostitution ring. "It's the notion that because I'm in power, I can satisfy myself sexually, that I'm defined sexually and have needs and can get them met," Anderson told the newspaper. "That license is given with the more power you get. Women just don't get that license because we don't have that type of power."

Andrew Revkin, reporter with The New York Times, wrote about a recent visit to the University of Delaware, where he spoke as part of the Global Agenda series, and about the live video of his talk Webcast via UD's Second Life presence, in his March 13 Dot Earth blog on the newspaper's Web site. The Global Agenda program is directed by Ralph Begleiter, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and distinguished journalist in residence.

Fightin' Blue Hens coaches, scholar-athletes and parents were featured in a series of stories about athletic scholarships that appeared in The New York Times March 10-12. Coaches quoted were Kim Ciarrocca of the women's lacrosse team, Jim Fischer of the men's cross country and track and field teams, scholar-athletes Katie Lee of the softball team, Emily Schaknowski of the women's lacrosse team and Cortney Barry of the women's swimming and diving team. Her mother, Margaret Barry, also was quoted.

Marvin Zuckerman, professor emeritus of psychology, was quoted in a March 13 Bloomberg News story about the behavior of Eliot Spitzer. An expert on sensation seeking, Zuckerman such behavior is “related to assertiveness and masculine traits: aggression, assertiveness, and dominance and competitiveness. They love the challenge. They like the fight.”

Scott Douglass, UD executive vice president, and Marge McDermott, assistant director in facilities planning, were quoted in a March 12 News Journal story about a town hall meeting to gather input from the campus community and area residents for an assessment of the Newark campus and its current capacity.

Karissa Thacker, supplemental faculty in business administration, was quoted in a March 10 Bloomberg News story about colorful Tribune Co. chairman Sam Zell. She said his “free-wheeling, shake things up way of behaving isn't for everyone, but it is effective for reaching those people who are willing to embrace new ways of doing their jobs.”

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a March 9 Sunday Times of London story about a Delaware court battled between media moguls Barry Diller and John Malone. Elson also was quoted in March 7 Sacramento Bee and Bloomberg News stories about GenCorp and the Delaware court case, in March 6 BusinessWeek, Dow Jones Newswires and Buffalo (N.Y.) News stories about Microsoft takeover tactics, Yahoo's takeover defense and First Niagara Financial Group, and in March 2 News Journal stories about threats to Delaware's dominance as a corporate center.

Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, was quoted in a March 9 Norfolk Virginian-Pilot about paper versus plastic shopping bags.

H. Perry Chapman, professor of art history, was quoted in a widely distributed March 8 Associated Press story about a Rembrandt masterpiece on loan from the Louvre that is making its first appearance in the United States as part of an exhibition of three self-portraits at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Chapman, an expert in the artist's self-portraits, said, “Rembrandt painted more self-portraits than anyone before him and practically anyone since. And just from viewing the three in the Cincinnati exhibit, one can see how intensely he studied himself and worked to convey something of his character and the strength of his intellect through his self-portraits.”

Conrado M. (Bobby) Gempesaw, dean of the Lerner College of Business and Economics, was quoted in a March 7 News Journal story about how natives of the Philippines now living in Delaware have make their mark without sacrificing the culture of their native land. Gempesaw told the newspaper, “There's a very strong pressure for us to succeed from the extended family in the Philippines.”

Bill Shafarman, a scientist at UD's Institute for Energy Conversion, was quoted in a March 7 Inside Tucson Business story about Arizona's Global Solar Energy company.

Doug Tallamy, chairperson of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, was featured in a March 6 story in The New York Times about gardening and the use of native plants. Tallamy is the author of a book on the subject, Bringing Nature Home. “I'm not trying to recreate the ancient ecosystem,” Tallamy told the Times. “That is gone. I'm trying to create biodiversity.”

Muqtedar Khan, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a March 6 Associated Press story about Imam Yahya Hendi, who he said “has been on the forefront of advancing Muslim-Jewish dialogue and Muslim-Christian dialogue.”

Eric Youngstrom, who earned a doctorate from UD in psychology and is an associate professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, was featured March 5 in a North Carolina Public Radio program and a WRAL-TV news broadcast about bipolar disorder. Youngstrom is associate director of UNC's Center of Excellence for Research and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder.

Julio Carrion, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a March 5 Dow Jones Newswires story about the Colombian incursion into Ecuador and the potential for polarization among Latin American nations.

Jeremy Firestone, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a March 5 News Journal story about wind power plans for the New Jersey shore.

Summer Beretsky, a UD graduate student, wrote a March 3 Los Angeles Times piece on coping with panic attacks.

Karen Curtis, associate professor of urban affairs and public policy, was quoted in a March 3 News Journal story about people who have left corporate jobs for positions in the nonprofit sector.

Michelle Barger, a graduate of the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation now working as conservator of objects as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, was featured in a March 2 San Francisco Chronicle story about acquisitions and conservation.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a March 2 Parade Magazine story concerning battles over wind power. “Adding wind electricity will drive down the cost of fossil fuels,” Kempton said.

David Legates, associate professor of geography, was featured in a March 1 News Journal story in advance of a presentation at the Heartland Institute's International Conference on Climate Change held in New York City.
