6:07 p.m., Feb. 18, 2008--Attention science, engineering and mathematics undergraduates eager to get into the lab or out in the field: there's a summer internship opportunity that might be a perfect fit for you. The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Delaware lets students conduct guided research in marine science at UD's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.
Funded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Division of Ocean Sciences, UD's REU program awards 10 internships each year. Interns work with faculty and research staff for 10 weeks in a graduate-student atmosphere on a research topic in chemical, physical or biological oceanography, marine biology, marine geology or marine biochemistry. The program runs from Monday, June 2, to Friday, Aug. 8. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 22.
“This is a great opportunity for students to do independent research,” said Ana Dittel, the program's coordinator. “It is also a way for students to determine what they want to do eventually (in their careers). Overall, hands-on research experience will enable students to enhance analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Also, learning how to give oral presentations and write scientific reports or papers will serve them in their future careers.”
Interns must attend weekly seminars presented by faculty and research staff and present written and oral reports at the end of the summer. Students receive one course credit. Support includes a $3,300 stipend, dormitory fee, tuition for the one-credit course and travel assistance. The Lewes campus--which is where the majority of the research in UD's College of Marine and Earth Studies marine biosciences and oceanography programs is conducted--is located in a resort town on the shores of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by a wide variety of marine habitats.
Rising seniors receive preference, but all students are encouraged to apply. Any students enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelor's degree (at UD or elsewhere) are eligible as long as they're citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Applicants are encouraged to electronically submit their application and a letter describing their general background and interests in pursuing the research experience. The application form and instructions are available at [www.ocean.udel.edu/academics/undergraduate/summer/application.shtml].
