Schweitzer and Xia designated named professors
Robert Schweitzer, Donald J. Puglisi Professor of Finance
2:49 p.m., Aug. 17, 2007--Two members of the UD faculty have been appointed named professors, Provost Dan Rich has announced.

Robert Schweitzer has been named Donald J. Puglisi Professor of Finance in recognition of his “continuing contributions through outstanding teaching, scholarship and service to the University of Delaware,” and to continue the “legacy of Don Puglisi,” professor emeritus, in helping UD students succeed, Rich said.

Xiang-Gen Xia has been named Charles Black Evans Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in recognition of his “distinguished scientific career and service to the University of Delaware and beyond,” Rich said.

Both appointments are effective Sept. 1.

Robert Schweitzer

Schweitzer, who also is a professor of economics, teaches in the area of financial institutions and markets. His research interests include mortgage markets, bank management and the regulation of financial institutions.

Schweitzer chaired the UD Department of Finance from 1990-97. He serves as a member of the board of trustees of the Eastern Finance Association and also was a member of the board of the Southern Finance Association.

He has published extensively in his field and serves as associate editor of the Financial Management Association's Survey and Synthesis Series. Schweitzer's publications include articles in the Journal of Finance, American Economic Review and Real Estate Finance and Economics, among others.

A graduate of Towson University, Schweitzer received his master's degree in economics from UD and his doctorate in finance from Duke University. Schweitzer joined the UD faculty in 1980.

Xiang-Gen Xia

Xiang-Gen Xia, Charles Black Evans Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Xia's research interests include wireless communication systems, space-time coding, SAR/ISAR (synthetic aperture radar/inverse synthetic aperture radar) imaging and filterbanks, wavelets, time-frequency analysis and other signal and image processing.

He holds seven patents and has written more than 160 refereed journal articles. He also is the author of Modulated
Coding for Intersymbol Interference Channels
and has held editorial positions for IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and EURASIP (European Association for Signal Processing) publications. He serves on the Sensor and Multichannel Technical Committee in the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

His research has been sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Laboratory, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Among his awards, Xia received the NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award in 1997, the ONR Young Investigator Award in 1998, the Outstanding Overseas Young Investigator Award of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2001 and the Outstanding Junior Faculty of Engineering Award from UD in 2001.

Xia is a graduate of Nanjing Normal University with master's degrees in mathematics from Nankai University, China, and in applied mathematics from the University of Cincinnati, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. He joined the UD faculty in 1996 after serving as a researcher at the Air Force Institute of Technology from 1993-94 and at the Hughes Research Laboratories in California from 1995-96.

Donald Puglisi joined the UD faculty in 1971 and was named MBNA America Professor of Business Emeritus in 2002. While at UD, Puglisi received the Medal of Distinction in 1996, the UD Excellence in Teaching Award and other college teaching awards.

Charles Black Evans, who received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Delaware College by 1889, was an attorney, who became a trustee in 1894 and succeeded his father, George G. Evans, as secretary-treasurer of UD's Board of Trustees from 1896 until his death in 1933.
