10:25 a.m., Aug. 1, 2007--UD's Department of Music is hosting the Gordon Institute for Music Learning (GIML) through Friday, Aug. 3, drawing 27 current and aspiring music educators from as far away as Israel, Portugal and Italy.

Initiated by Suzanne Burton, assistant professor of music at UD, the two-week institute, which began July 23, usually is hosted by Bryn Mawr College. Going forward, is anticipated that GIML will now be hosted by UD and Bryn Mawr on alternate summers.

“This is our first year of hosting the institute,” Burton said. “It offers a wonderful opportunity for music educators and graduate students to learn about music development, music theory and audiation.”

GIML participants earn 80 clock hours of credit at completion, as well as tuition reimbursement, in most cases, if they are actively teaching.

Coursework is designed for music educators at the preK-grade 12 level, as well as for freelance instrument and voice instructors and students earning certification in music education who meet certain prerequisites (courses are at the graduate level).
