11:02 a.m., April 15, 2008--The first University of Delaware Public Service Careers Week will be held Monday-Thursday, April 21-24.
Baby boomer retirements have put the public sector in hiring mode. So, UD is hosting a weeklong series of events to inform students how they can “do well by doing good” with internships and jobs in government and nonprofit sectors.
Marianne Green, assistant director of Career Services, says Public Services Career Week is meant to bring students an awareness of a wealth of possibilities for careers serving the public.
“Exciting events and programs are planned to help students learn more about the world of public service careers and how to go about pursuing these jobs and internships. Students interested in work in the nonprofit and government sectors should try to attend as many events as they can,” she says.
The week's events include “where and how to get nonprofit jobs” workshops, a panel of UD alumni discussing their public service jobs, and a career fair where employers from 90 or more nonprofit and government organizations will be on hand to share information about internships and job opportunities with interested students.
There will be a chance to meet and greet representatives of organizations such as the Delaware Humane Association, New Castle County government, Teach for America, U.S. Department of Labor, Social Security Administration, Quaker Hill Historic Society and the U.S. Secret Service.
Public Service Careers Week is cosponsored by the Bank of America Career Services Center, the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics and the College of Arts and Sciences.
