City permits now required for tents, canopies

3:01 p.m., April 14, 2008--The city of Newark now requires that all UD departments and other organizations planning to use tents covering more than 200 square feet and canopies covering more than 400 square feet obtain permits from the city.

A maximum of five tents or canopies can be placed on a single permit.

Permit process:

  • Pick up and submit applications for a permit in the building department at city hall on Elkton Road. Each permit application should include a $25 checks made out to “City of Newark”;
  • The application must be accompanied by a site plan showing distances between tents and nearby buildings and a floor plan explaining the use of the structure, showing seating and table arrangements and at least two clearly marked exits if more than 50 people are expected;
  • A certificate of flame resistance is required and can be obtained from the tent/canopy rental company; and
  • The city will notify the department or organization when permits can be picked up.

Requirements:

  • When 50 or more persons occupy a tent or canopy, at least two marked exits are required;
  • There must be 12 feet of space between each tent and/or canopy;
  • All tents and canopies must be inspected by a UD Department of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) fire protection representative and the Newark Fire Marshall before use;
  • Event sponsors must coordinate with UD Supporting Services for tent and event set-up and with Facilities-Grounds Services for site clearance;
  • Fire extinguishers as required; and
  • Cooking is only permitted under tents or canopies designated exclusively for the preparation of food.
