12:02 p.m., Sept. 8, 2006--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Ben Yagoda, professor of English and author of the forthcoming book When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It: The Parts of Speech, for Better and/or Worse, wrote a column for the Sept. 8 Chronicle of Higher Education on the seven deadly sins of student writers.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in Sept. 7 New York Times from his testimony on executive compensation and the backdating of stock options before the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. Elson also was quoted Sept. 8 by CNN Money and in the Sept. 8 Financial Times and USA Today and the Sept. 6 San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News concerning the workings of the Hewlett Packard board. And he was quoted in the Sept. 6 Wall Street Journal in a story about board independence in entertainment companies.

Mark J. Miller, Emma Smith Professor of Political Science and International Relations, and Kenneth Campbell, associate professor of political science and international relations, were quoted in a Sept. 7 News Journal story concerning President George W. Bush's plans for dealing with suspected terrorists. "We can't do things that violate our basic notions of law and fair play, no matter how despicable the person is," Miller said. "He or she deserves a process that is consistent with our standards." Campbell said, "The president's search for guidelines is unnecessary. Once Congress decided to buy into the Geneva Conventions years ago, they agreed to those rules. They can't fudge that. It's not up to the U.S. Congress to begin to try to rewrite treaties."

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine policy, was quoted in a Sept. 6 Bethany Wave story on the use of wind power to supplement Delaware's energy supply. “We think it is very attractive,” Kempton said, adding, “It could be an export industry.”

Timothy Targett, professor of marine studies, was quoted in a Sept. 5 News Journal story about stingrays following the death of television personality Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. Injuries from stingrays are rare in Delaware waters, Targett said, adding that those that do occur are very painful because of the creature's whipping barbed tail.

Kelvin Ramsey, of the UD-based Delaware Geological Survey, was quoted in a Sept. 5 News Journal story about the great coastal storm of 1878, which he called “the hurricane of record for the north half of Delaware.”

Novel liquid body armor developed by Norman Wagner, Alvin B. and Julia O. Stiles Professor of Chemical Engineering, in cooperation with UD alumnus Eric Wetzel of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, was featured in the Sept. 3 Sunday Times of London.

Susan Strasser, professor of history, had a quotation from her book Waste and Want: A Social History of Trash used as an answer in the acrostic puzzle in the Sept. 3 New York Times Magazine.

Kimmie Meissner, world champion figure skater with the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club, and Jeff Schneider, trainer and instructor in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, were featured in a Sept. 3 Baltimore Sun column about the competitor's rigorous daily workouts at the UD Ice Skating Science Development Center.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Sept. 1 Associated Press story about the Muslim community in the United States following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He said American Muslims “realize that there are Muslims who use terrorism, and the community is beginning to stand up to this.''

Tim Mavor, a UD alumnus who earned a doctorate in oceanography from the College of Marine and Earth Studies, was featured in an Aug. 25 News Journal story for his work flying into hurricanes as a member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's scientific research team.

Sanford Robbins, chairperson of the Department of Theatre, received strong reviews in the Sept. 2 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for his work directing Julius Caesar for the American Players Theatre. “Director Sanford Robbins' ferociously muscular take on the assassination of a popular political leader throbs with passion and reverberates with theatrical boldness,” theatre critic Damien Jaques wrote. “It's among the most technically complex shows the APT has mounted on its rustic outdoor stage.” The production also was praised in the Wisconsin State Journal, the Capital Times, the Shepherd Express and the magazine Vital Source.

A summer art conservation program that was part of the University of Delaware's Paul R. Jones Initiative was featured on the Spelman College web site [www.spelman.edu].
