Blue Hen surfer preps for ESA championships

11:44 a.m., Sept. 14, 2006--University of Delaware surfer Jennifer Abrams is preparing for the Eastern Surfing Association's Eastern Surfing Championships to be held Sept. 17-23 at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Buxton, N.C.

Abrams, a senior history major from Seaford, will be competing in the women's classification. She is scheduled to hit the waves in a first round heat that includes Ashley Francis, Sarah Dodds, Jenny Callahan, Charlotte Witte and Molli Miller, who was one of the athletes featured on the MTV Surf Girls program in 2003.

“I have surfed against Molli before and she's definitely a threat,” Abrams said, adding Francis, of Florida, and Dodds, of New Jersey, also are of concern. “My first heat is stacked and will be challenging,” she said.

In 2005, Abrams finished second in the Easterns in a very close heat against one of the top surfers in the nation, Kelly Nicely.

Earlier this year, Abrams won the Eastern Surfing Association's Mid-Atlantic regionals and earned a berth in the Surfing America USA Championships held July 11-19 in Oceanside, Calif. She said her showing at the championships was “disappointing, however it was hard to be helped considering the wave conditions.”

Overall for Abrams, the 2006 surfing season “has been pretty good so far.” She won all of the local contests and advanced out of the first round in an East Coast professional contest in Virginia Beach, barely getting knocked out in the second round. “That contest was probably the highlight of my season,” she said. “Professional contests are very challenging and to do fairly well is exciting.”

Abrams is hoping for good conditions at Easterns, with the forecast wavering at the moment depending on the path of Hurricane Gordon. “The conditions are sort of up in the air for Easterns as of right now,” she said. “My guess is that it should be fairly good sized and some decent chop from the wind. I'm alright with anything, as long as there is something to ride.”
