Hens Hoopla to kick off basketball season

5:16 p.m., Oct. 4, 2006--Hens Hoopla, a high-energy pep rally extravaganza to kick off the 2006-2007 UD basketball season, is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, at the Bob Carpenter Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will provide an opportunity to see both the men's and women's teams introduced, hear from the head coaches Monté Ross and Tina Martin, and watch both teams scrimmage.

YoUDee, the UD cheerleaders and dance team will participate. Activities will include the “Wing War” finals, contests and giveaways.

The “Wing War” is open to all UD students and is organized by Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. With wings donated by Buffalo Wild Wings, registration is $10 and all proceeds will benefit YouthAids. Preliminary and semi-final rounds will be held outside of the Perkins Student Center on Wednesday, Oct. 11, with the final rounds being held at the pep rally.

Also planned for the pep rally is the unveiling of the winners of the Homecoming Banner Competition. The contest, open to all recognized UD student organizations, encourages groups to design a homecoming banner. Entrees will be on display from Oct. 4-12 in the food court of the Trabant University Center. Winners will be determined at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, and will be presented that evening at the pep rally.

First-place winners will get to run on the field during pregame at the homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 14. Second- and third-place winners will be recognized on the message center at the football game.

Hens Hoopla is sponsored by the Cockpit. The Cockpit is a UD student group dedicated to fostering support for UD athletic teams. Its aim is to provide enthusiastic support to student-athletes and give UD an imposing home field and home court advantage at all UD athletic events. Membership benefits include the official Cockpit T-shirt, the opportunity to participate in promotions and the chance to receive giveaways at all Cockpit events.

Activities at the pep rally will include a 3-point shooting contest and “Shoot for Books,” which will give one Cockpit member an attempt at a half court shot to earn money for books from the University Bookstore. Additionally, there will be a random drawing to award one lucky Cockpit member a 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro laptop at the end of the pep rally.
