First Buxbaum nursing scholarship awarded

Buxbaum Scholarship winner Carolyn Ziminski (second from right), a sophomore nursing student, and School of Nursing faculty (from left) Veronica Rempusheski, Thomas Hardie, Kathleen Schell and Marlene Adams pause outside of McDowell Hall on their way to a gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of the National Institute of Nursing Research in Washington, D.C.

2:58 p.m., Oct. 25, 2006--Carolyn E. Ziminski, a sophomore in UD's School of Nursing, has been awarded the first Jeanne K. Buxbaum Scholarship in gerontological nursing.

Buxbaum Scholarships, for undergraduate and graduate nursing students, are available to those who intend to specialize in gerontological nursing.

Veronica F. Rempusheski, Jeanne K. Buxbaum Chair of Nursing
Sciences, announced the award. “The thing that really comes through when working with Carolyn is her passion for the elderly,” she said. “The more I've worked with her, the more I've been able to see that she truly has this passion.”

Ziminski said she became interested in aging because of her positive experiences with her grandparents and great-grandmother. As a result, she provided elder care as a home health assistant and community volunteer. Ziminski said her long-term goal is to become a geriatric nurse practitioner and one day have her own nursing home.

Buxbaum Scholarship recipients must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students in nursing whose goal is to work with the aging.

To be considered for a scholarship, a student must submit a statement outlining short- and long-term career goals relating to gerontological nursing.
