Saul Hoffman, professor of economics, was featured in the Nov. 17 News Journal and Oct. 29 USA Today for his research on the cost to taxpayers of teenagers having babies.

Patricia Drake, instructor of nursing, was quoted in a Nov. 17 News Journal story on UD's accelerated nursing program, which is designed to close the gap as hospitals cope with shortages.

Dan Rich, provost, and Louis W. Hirsh, director of admissions, were quoted in a story about the University's Commitment to Delawareans in the Nov. 16 News Journal, and also by WHYY-TV, WDEL-AM and the Sussex Countian.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Nov. 15 Bloomberg News story on news Securities and Exchange Commission rules governing executive pay consultants. Elson also was quoted in a Nov. 13 Associated Press story on options backdating in Silicon Valley, a Nov. 12 Charlotte Observer story on use of planes by executives, a Nov. 10 Detroit News story on directors at nonprofit organizations, a Nov. 9 Associated Press story on UnitedHealth Group, a Nov. 8 Associated Press story on the Heinz board, and a Nov. 4 New York Times story on Morgan Stanley criticism of the Times Co. stock structure.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, and Rudi Matthee, professor of history, were quoted in a Nov. 13 News Journal story on rising interest in courses about the Middle East.

Joseph Pika, professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Nov. 12 News Journal story on the Bidens and a Nov. 9 News Journal story on elections in the state.

James R. Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a Nov. 12 Delaware State News story about the state elections, as well as in stories in the Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 News Journal.

Burton A. Abrams, professor of economics, was quoted in a Nov. 12 News Journal story on the cost of living outpacing wages.

Gordon Johnson, of the UD Cooperative Extension Service, was quoted in a Nov. 11 News Journal story about corn and soybean production in the state.

UD student Sara Beth Winters was quoted in a Nov. 10 Wall Street Journal story about high-quality state universities. Titled “Beyond Berkeley,” it featured the University of Delaware.

Heather Hoffer, a UD alumnus who graduated with a degree in animal science, was featured Nov. 10 on the Good Day Philadelphia program on WTXF-TV Channel 29. She is working as a zookeeper and lecturer at Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, a small zoo in central Pennsylvania, and was on the program to help promote an exhibit at the Franklin Institute. She also managed to plug UD and the Fightin' Blue Hens.

James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, was quoted in a Nov. 9 News Journal story about Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives and how that might affect businesses in the state. "I am sure neither party wants to slow the economy down or hurt it in the long run," Butkiewicz said.

Mark VanGessel, professor of plant and soil science, was featured in a Nov. 8 Cape Gazette story about the use of remote-controlled airplanes to study weeds.

Sharron Lennon, Irma Ayers Professor of Fashion and Apparel Studies, was quoted in a Nov. 7 Orlando Sentinel story about body image among models and entertainers. "We see a lot of thin bodies in the media,” Lennon said. “That's what everyone sees on TV, in movies and, certainly, in fashion magazines. If their bodies don't match the bodies depicted in the media, then [they feel that] they have a bad body.”

George Basalla, professor emeritus of history, was featured in a Nov. 7 News Journal story about him and his latest book, Civilized Life in the Universe: Scientists on Intelligent Extraterrestrials.

Martha Buell, professor of individual and family studies, was quoted in a Nov. 7 News Journal story on giving children an early start on healthy eating habits.

Bud Malone, UD Cooperative Extension Service poultry agent, was quoted in a Nov. 7 News Journal story about his research on the use of water-based foam to destroy poultry flocks infected with avian flu.

William Latham, associate professor of economics, was quoted in a Nov. 5 News Journal story on the announcement that Daimler Chrysler's Newark assembly plant might close.

Michael Wagner, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Nov. 5 Philadelphia Inquirer story on the candidacy of Michael Berg, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress. Wagner also was quoted in a Nov. 7 News Journal story on candidates who go door to door, and served as an election night analyst for WHYY-TV.

Timothy E. Targett, professor of marine and earth studies, was featured in a Nov. 3 interview on radio station WDEL-AM concerning overfishing and other human impacts on marine biodiversity and global fishery resources.

Vita Nova, the first-rate teaching restaurant administered by the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management in the Trabant University Center, was featured in the November issue of Out & About magazine. The story quoted Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, and several students in the program.

William Farquhar, assistant professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, was quoted in a Nov. 1 United Press International story about his research into how veins stiffen with age.

UD research on corn resistant to stalk rot undertaken by James Hawk, professor of plant and soil science, was cited in an Oct. 31 Wall Street Journal story on advances in seed strains.

Joel Best, professor of sociology, was quoted in an Oct. 30 McClatchy Newspapers story and an Oct. 29 Rocky Mount (N.C.) Telegram story about trick or treaters and urban legends surrounding Halloween.

Barbara L. Kreppel, associate vice president for administrative services, and Jennifer Galt, manager of the University of Delaware Bookstore, were quoted in the September edition of University Business magazine, in a story titled “Not Your Typical Textbook Advice” offering bookstore directors and administrators strategies for keeping up with online textbook competition. UD is featured in four of the 20 examples, and is shown in one of the photographs. Galt discusses involvement of the Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress in communicating with faculty concerning the need to get textbook adoption orders in on time, the need to be where the customer is with a mobile book buyback van and the use of lowest price guarantees, and Kreppel discussed increased funding for book buybacks. "In the past year, primarily because of lowest-price guarantee and the doubled price for buyback, we've seen our sales improve significantly," Kreppel said. "Much of this is thinking in the same way as any kind of retail. You have to know what your customer wants, be where they are."
