Summer Sessions at UD start June 4

4:11 p.m., May 10, 2007--Summer Sessions at UD run from June 4-Aug. 10, with the first sessions running from June 4-July 7 and from June 4-July 26, and the second session running from July 9-Aug. 10.

Open to all UD undergraduates and graduate-level students, as well as all Delaware public school teachers and general continuing education students, the sessions include a wide range of courses that satisfy the requirements of many different majors.

“Summer Sessions serve a pretty broad range of students,” Allan Fanjoy, UD administrator of special sessions, said. “Generally, the breakdown of those who attend is about 40 percent UD undergraduates and 20 percent graduate students.”

Fanjoy said the remainder of participants are members of the community, students from other colleges picking up credits over the summer, and Delaware public school teachers, who, through their teaching contracts, can take any course(s) they wish for just the $40 registration fee.

“Many students take Summer Session courses because they want to spread out their workload or because they're double majors and find it hard to fit all the courses they need into their schedules,” Fanjoy said. “Some continuing education students take classes just for the love of learning.”

Fanjoy added that many continuing education students also pick up classes during Summer Sessions to boost their earning potential.

Courses offered, he said, tend to be those that fit the requirements of many majors, with English and mathematics courses leading the way.

“Summer Session offerings don't include the entire course catalog at UD,” Fanjoy said, adding that the sessions typically draw about 6,000 students (compared to the more than 20,000 students during fall and spring semesters). “The most popular courses are offered during Summer Sessions, as well as courses that satisfy many different major requirements.”
