9:09 a.m., May 25, 2007--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Louis Hirsh, director of admissions, was quoted in a May 24 News Journal story about the incoming Class of 2011, drawn from more than 23,000 applications and the largest and most accomplished in UD history. The report was part of the semiannual Board of Trustees meeting, which also was covered by WDEL-AM. Earlier, Hirsh was quoted in a May 16 Wall Street Journal story about university wait lists.

Sumner Spence, a UD student with cerebral palsy, was featured in a May 24 National Public Radio Morning Edition report.

Karen Rosenberg, chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, was quoted in a May 24 MSNBC Interactive story about female sexuality and human evolution.

Thomas Gaisser, Martin A. Pomerantz Chair of Physics and Astronomy, was quoted May 24 concerning work on the “IceCube” research project at the South Pole in a number of online publications, including Photonics.

UD and Newark were featured in a May 23 Washington Post travel story, as journalist Zofia Smardz wrote, “The campus, which engorges about half the town of 28,000 with its elegant, elongated Green, is a stunning landscape of Georgian Colonial red-brick, white-columned architecture to rival anything conceived by Thomas Jefferson. The very idea made my husband, a Virginian and alumnus of Mr. Jefferson's University in Charlottesville, harrumph. But after a recent weekend in Newark, even he had to concede the wisdom of the Princeton Review, which in 1999 decreed the Delaware school 'absolutely the most gorgeous campus anywhere.'"

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a May 22 Reuters story about Alltel and a takeover bid, in a May 21 New York Post story on proxy wars, in a May 20 Buffalo News story on Lake Shore shareholder challenges, in a May 19 Los Angeles Times story about U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her service on the Wal-Mart board, a May 19 News Journal story about a new state law expanding the state's role in corporate governance and in a May 19 Associated Press story about private equity buyouts and the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Also, Elson was quoted in the May 18 St. Paul Pioneer Press about large severance packages given to fired executives, the May 8 USA Today and the May 8 Chicago Tribune, both concerning financier Carl Icahn and the Motorola board, the May 8 San Francisco Chronicle about Marvell Technologies Group and the May 6 Detroit Free Press about rising pay for auto executives.

Mark J. Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a May 22 News Journal story on the 1986 amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Lesa Griffiths, director of the Center for International Studies, and Diane Henker, assistant director, were quoted in a May 22 News Journal story on federal grants funding international scholarship programs.

Katherine Grier, adjunct professor in UD's Winterthur Program in Early American Culture, was featured in a May 16 National Public Radio report about pets.

Ian Appelbaum, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, was featured for research in spintronics May 16 in a number of online publications, including Scientific American and Tech Review.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a May 8 News Journal story on a proposed wind farm off the coast of Delaware.

Sandy Robbins, founding director of UD's Professional Theatre Training Program, was quoted in a May 7 News Journal story about the campus visit of actors James Cromwell and Joan MacIntosh, who spoke at the PTTP graduation ceremony.

Steven K. Dentel, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was quoted in a May 6 News Journal story about Delaware Air National Guard efforts to go green.
