11:26 a.m., May 7, 2007--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Jeremy Firestone, assistant professor of marine and earth studies, was quoted in a May 4 National Public Radio Morning Edition story about offshore wind power. "I think it's the real beginning of change. Not just rhetoric but change as we move towards beginning to actively address climate change," he said of growing interest in wind power.

Aaron Kupchik, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice, was featured in a May 4 ScienceCareers.org story about the national response to violence in schools.

Dewey Caron, professor of entomology and wildlife ecology, was quoted in a May 4 News Journal story about the dramatic decline in the state's bee population. Caron also was interviewed about the decline by WPIX-TV of New York.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted about the Rupert Murdoch bid to buy Dow Jones in May 3 stories by the Australian Associated Press, Agence-France Presse, USA Today and the Sacramento Bee. Also, Elson was quoted in a May 3 San Francisco Chronicle story about the Apple board and the options scandal and in an April 29 Financial Times story about McAfee and corporate raiders.

Stuart Semmel, associate professor of history, was quoted in a May 2 Boston Globe story and in a May 4 Chicago Tribune story about the visit by Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the British founding of the Jamestown colony. "Americans are royal crazy," Semmel told the Tribune. "It's ironic we fought a war to not have a monarch and yet here we are fawning all over the British."

Dene Klinzing, professor of individual and family studies, was quoted in an April 30 News Journal story about people dealing with chronic illness.

Robert Hampel, professor of education, was quoted in an April 28 News Journal story about high school reform in the state.

A University lecture by Justice Antonin Scalia received wide coverage April 28. The lecture was arranged by Sheldon Pollack, director of UD's Legal Studies Program.
