Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, and Erik Thostenson, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, are featured in the cover story of the March issue of Eureka magazine. The story concerns their research on the use of carbon nanotubes to detect defects in composite materials. Robin Elliott, UD director of occupational health and safety and chairperson of the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association, is quoted in a March 16 Chronicle of Higher Education story about campus safety. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a March 16 Los Angeles Times story about the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) annual list of companies it has identified as corporate underachievers. He also was quoted in a March 14 Los Angeles Times story about Hewlett Packard and in a March 13 Sacramento Bee story about CalPERS. Audrey Noble, director of the Delaware Education Research and Development Center, and Kelly Sherretz, education specialist at the center, were quoted in a March 16 News Journal story about a report on a state achievement gap study to the State Board of Education. Mark Deshon, assistant policy scientists in the Institute for Public Administration, was quoted in a March 15 News Journal story about government entering the digital age. Michael Gamel-McCormick, professor and interim chairperson of the Department of Individual and Family Studies, was quoted in a March 13 News Journal story about birth order. "When balanced with the child's individual personality, preference and style, birth order is a good tool parents can use to reflect on family dynamics and childhood experiences,” he said. William Latham, associate professor of economics, was quoted in a March 13 News Journal story about job cuts in the state by Bank of America. Dewey Caron, professor of entomology and wildlife ecology, was quoted in stories in the March 13 Charlotte Observer and Columbus Dispatch about the disappearance of honeybees. Blake Meyers, associate professor of plant and soil sciences who is affiliated with both UD's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, was featured on the National Science Foundation web site for his work in the deep sequencing of the rice genome and work in small RNAs. Linda Gottfreson, professor of education, was quoted about IQ in a March 11 St. Petersburg Times story concerning a murder trial. Karen Curtis, associate professor of urban affairs, was quoted in a March 11 News Journal story about the loss of MBNA America and its impact on nonprofit organizations in the state. Ron Nichols, manager in IT-User Services, was quoted in a March 11 News Journal story about the impact of the early coming of Daylight Saving Time on computers. Ben Yagoda, professor of English, was featured in a March 11 New York Times Sunday Book Review section piece on new books about the English language. Yagoda is the author of When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It. John Byrne, director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, was quoted in a March 10 Associated Press story about a new European Union plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions. |
