Xiao-Hai Yan, Mary A.S. Lighthipe Professor of Marine Studies, was featured in the July issue of Aerospace America for his research on deep-ocean whirlpools known as Meddies. Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair in Corporate Governance and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a July 28 Reuters story about the use of poison pills in corporate takeovers and in a July 28 Sacramento Bee story about healthy investment returns posted by the California State Teachers' Retirement System. “If you had a 13 percent return every year, I think the retirees would be very happy,” Elson said. Also, Elson was quoted in a July 25 Forbes online story about the stock options backdating scandal and in a July 24 Philadelphia Inquirer story about a potential ethical dilemma for a Pennsylvania politician who also serves on the board of directors of the Geo Group. Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, wrote a commentary on U.S. inaction in the current Middle East crisis that appears on the July 28 OpEd News and alt.muslim online sites. James R. Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a July 28 News Journal story about political appearances at the Delaware State Fair. "I think you'll always have to be at the fair because, if you're not, people will take note," Soles said. "But as things keep changing, I don't know if it will always be as important." Edward Ratledge, director of UD's Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, was quoted in a July 25 News Journal story about the state's growing demand for special housing. Dot Abbott, UD extension educator for renewable resources, was quoted in a July 23 News Journal story about how the sights and sounds of nature can be found close to home. "Exposure to the natural world is an essential part of growing up. It increases a child's awareness and improves observational skills," she said. "This connection to nature also encourages a child's sense of wonder and leads to a fuller life of exploration and learning." Eleanor Craig, associate professor of economics, was featured in a July 14 WILM-AM Newsmaker Live interview concerning money and politics in Delaware. Carey Fleiner, supplemental faculty in foreign languages and literatures, published an article in the May issue of the journal Popular Music and Society as part of a special issue highlighting the British rock group The Kinks. |
