Doris Hicks, seafood technology specialist at the University of Delaware Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service, was quoted in a Jan. 10 Associated Press story on the merits of tuna, fresh and frozen. Fish freezing methods have improved dramatically, she told the AP.

Robin Morgan, dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and David Weir, director of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, were quoted in a Jan. 10 Salisbury (Md.) Daily Times story about the use of solar power in poultry houses.

Willett Kempton, associate professor of marine policy, was quoted in Jan. 9 Cape Gazette and Jan. 7 Delaware State News stories about the benefits of wind power.

Beth Mineo Mollica, director of UD's Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative, was quoted in a Jan. 8 News Journal story about a $600,000 U.S. Department of Education grant that has been awarded to the organization to provide for an increase in the reuse of assistive devices among Delaware residents with disabilities.

William Farquhar, assistant professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, was featured in a Jan. 5 Voice of America story about his research that shows veins stiffen with age.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 Atlanta Journal-Constitution stories about large payouts to chief executive officers. Elson also was quoted in a Jan. 4 Business Week story on what promises to be a lively proxy season and a Jan. 2 Corporate Board Member story on crisis management.

Jochen Lauterbach, professor of chemical engineering, and Chris Snively, research associate, were featured in a Jan. 4 News Journal story about their discovery of a new class of polymers. The story also appeared on several online science news services, including Nanotechwire, Innovations Report and Engineer Online.

Eleanor Craig, associate professor of economics, was quoted in a Jan. 4 News Journal story the impact on workers of a proposed boost to the federal minimum wage. "The very marginal employees will lose their jobs," Craig said. "The people you are trying to help could be helped more satisfactorily with wage supplements, or earned income tax supplements, or expanding job searches rather than raising the minimum wage."

Michael Gamel-McCormick, interim chairperson of the Department of Individual and Family Studies, was quoted in a Jan. 2 News Journal story on birth order in families. "In a typical family pattern, parents who have had one child generally get more comfortable in the parenting role," Gamel-McCormick said. "By the time the second, third or fourth ones come along, they ease up on standards and expectations and interact differently with later-born children."

David Legates, associate professor of geography, was quoted in a Jan. 2 Chicago Sun-Times story about climate change and polar bears. He said that in the 1930s, polar bears survived a period in which Arctic air was a warm as it is today.

James R. Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a Jan. 2 News Journal story about the election of Joseph R. (Beau) Biden III to the position of Delaware Attorney General.

Irene Davis, professor of physical therapy, was quoted about gait analysis in a story in the Jan. 1 Los Angeles Times and about barefoot running in a front page story in the Dec. 27 Wall Street Journal. "A lot of this shoe support stuff just makes your foot lazy and puts your foot muscles to sleep," Davis said.

Pam Cummings, associate professor of hotel, restaurant and institutional management, was quoted in a Jan. 1 News Journal story about manners and etiquette. "There is language you use that you would never use with your grandmother but that you use with your friend. It doesn't mean you're a big fake. You're choosing to express yourself properly,” Cummings said.

Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Dec. 31 News Journal story about the hanging of Saddam Hussein.

Mark J. Miller, Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, was quoted in a Dec. 31 News Journal story about people who have fled Guatemala for Delaware. “They're on a quest for a better life,” he told the newspaper.
