Chinese New Year festivities set for Feb. 17 2:15 p.m., Feb. 2, 2007--Members of UD's Chinese Students and Scholars Association will usher in the Year of the Boar with traditional Chinese New Year festivities on Saturday, Feb. 17. The celebration, which runs from 7-10 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, will highlight the talents of many UD students and community members of Chinese descent and will include a kung-fu demonstration, traditional music performed on Chinese instruments, a Chinese opera and traditional dances, such as the lion and Daizu dances. The presentations are designed to showcase Eastern customs while increasing cultural pride, awareness and curiosity on campus. Chinese New Year, which is also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. The traditional celebration lasts for 15 days, until the first full moon of the new year, and typically concludes with parades, fireworks and displays of brightly burning lanterns. Originally a religious ceremony, the Chinese New Year honors household gods and family ancestors. Tickets for the Feb. 17 event are $5 each and can be purchased at Mitchell Hall on the night of the festival or in advance.
